McBrine Company Photo?

Can anyone confirm that this is a company photo of the McBrine Luggage Factory from Berlin (now Kitchener) Ontario? I believe I can see my grandfather in the photo but would like some confirmation. Can you identify anyone else?

  1. Hello Mark -

I live in Waterloo, Ontario, and I'm researching the history of my house. I know that the person who had it built, and who lived in it for 60 years, worked at the McBrine Luggage factory in Kitchener for many years. So, before I began consulting our local history archives, I did a Google image search for McBrine to see what was online, and came across the photo you posted in 2010.

In case you're still wondering, I can confirm that it's McBrine Co. The mural lettering matches other period photos of the factory. Also, the McBrine address was 73 Charles St., and 73 appears above the door in your photo.

The original owner of my house - Conrad Allendorf - is almost certainly in the photo, sitting on the loading bay ledge. I recognized him immediately. I'm in the process of confirming this ID with his descendants, just to be sure.

I'll be writing a blog post about my house history on our neighbourhood history blog Mary Allen Stories sometime this year, and I'd like to include a source attribution for your photo. Is the photo in your own family collection? Or is it from an archival collection?

    Many thanks,

    Karl Kessler
